A Chemical History Tour: Picturing Chemistry from Alchemy to Modern Molecular Science by Arthur Greenberg,
Praise for A Chemical History Tour: Picturing Chemistry from Alchemy to Modern Molecular Science . . . "With the original picture of life science and often startling images of chemistry, Arthur Greenberg makes the history of science come to life. A remarkable, witty book!" -- Roald Hoffmann, PhD, Nobel Laureate "Chemistry has perhaps the most intricate, most fascinating, picture of life science and certainly most romantic history of all the sciences. Arthur Greenberg's A Chemical History Tour: Picturing Chemistry from Alchemy to Modern Molecular Science provides an entirely new sort of history, a dramatic journey in which he transports us through more than a hundred scenes or episodes from the earliest beginnings of alchemy to the latest in quantum mechanics picture of life science and transmutation. Dr. Greenberg's essays--delightful, learned, quirky, highly personal, picture of life science and richly illustrated with contemporary drawings (many of great rarity picture of life science and beauty)--provide a kaleidoscope of intellectual landscapes, bringing the experiments, the ideas, picture of life science and the human figures of chemistry's past intensely alive." -- Dr. Oliver Sacks, author of Awakenings About the cover art . . . The artwork on the cover of this book is from an egg tempera painting (original in full color; author's private collection) signed in 1845 picture of life science and is a version of a 17th century work by David Teniers the Younger (J. Read, Prelude to Chemistry, The MacMillan Co., New York, Plate 29; J. Read, The Alchemist in Life, Literature, picture of life science and Art, Thomas Nelson picture of life science and Sons Ltd., London, 1947, Plate 21 picture of life science and pp. 72-79). It has some mischief in it: the leg of the table has a mouth picture of life science and an eye reminiscent of a tortoise or dragon--both potent chemical symbols. The painting is signed "las voy" ("les noy" orsimilar) with some symbols picture of life science and we do not know the identity of the artist. The Four Hills of Life: Northern Arapaho Knowledge and Life Movement by Jeffrey D. Anderson,

The Four Hills of Life: Northern Arapaho Knowledge and Life Movement by Jeffrey D. Anderson,
For many generations the Northern Arapaho people thrived over a vast area of the North American Plains picture of life science and Rocky Mountains. For more than a century they have lived on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. The reservation, the fourth largest in the country, is surrounded by vast rural lands picture of life science and has been largely ignored by outsiders. As a result, the Northern Arapahos have been in some ways more isolated from mainstream American society than most Native groups. In The Four Hills of Life Jeffrey D. Anderson masterfully draws together many different aspects of the Northern Arapahos' world -- myth, language, art, ritual, identity, picture of life science and history -- to offer a compelling picture of a culture that has endured picture of life science and changed over time. Arapaho culture is seen dynamically through the ways that members of the community in the past picture of life science and present experience their unique world in everyday life. Anderson shows that Northern Arapaho unity picture of life science and identity from the nineteenth century through today are derived less from political centralization than from a shared system of ritual practices. The heart of this system is a complex of rituals called the beyoowu'u ("all the lodges"), which includes the Offerings Lodge, now more commonly known as the Sun Dance -- a ritual still central to Northern Arapaho life. According to Anderson, the beyoowu'u picture of life science and other life transition ceremonies work together to mold time picture of life science and experience for the Arapahos, a life movement that also helps create social identities picture of life science and transmit vital cultural knowledge. Anderson also offers an in-depth study of the problems that Euro-American society continues to impose on reservation life picture of life science and the empowered responses of the Northern Arapahos tothese problems.
